London Tier 3: The towns around London staying in Tier 2 - My London

The latest tier restrictions have been announced and London has been moved into Tier 3 after weeks of rumours and a spike in cases.

For a long time Londoners must have felt like they were going to stay in Tier 2 for Christmas but the government announced it would be heading into Tier 3 on Wednesday, December 16.

The new rules come into force at 0.01am.

From then Londoners will only be able to meet up in groups of six in public spaces and from only two households.

All hospitality and food venues must close except for takeaways. Some football fans in the capital had a brief reunion with their teams but in Tier 3 fans are no longer allowed in stadiums.

But there are many areas on the outskirts of London that will stay in Tier 2 and be able to spend the run up to Christmas in pubs and restaurants.

Two counties that border London have been split in half as the southern halves of Essex and Hertfordshire rise up to Tier 3 on Wednesday, the northern halves remain in Tier 2.

Towns in Surrey and Sussex will remain in Tier 2 while Kent was placed in Tier 3 when the last lockdown ended and will remain there.

Speaking from the House of Commons yesterday, Matt Hancock said: “The [national] average daily hospital admissions are up 13 per cent.

“The latest figures show that the average daily cases have risen by 14 per cent in the last week.

“And as before, this rise and this spread is not even across the country.
