Government explains Cheshire and Warrington Tier 3 move - and what’s most worrying about it - Cheshire Live

The Government has revealed why it has placed Cheshire and Warrington in Tier 3.

In a press conference at Downing Street, Matt Hancock announced that Cheshire West and Chester, Cheshire East and Warrington will all go up a tier following a sharp rise in coronavirus infection rates.

The new rules will come into force on Boxing Day and will mean that pubs, bars and restaurants will have to close and can only offer takeaway or delivery services.

Following the Health Secretary's statement, the Government published the reasons why Cheshire's alert level had been elevated.

It said that the picture in the area had "deteriorated", with case rates increasing in all three local authorities by more than 50% in the last week.

The full statement said: "In the last week the picture in Cheshire and Warrington has deteriorated, with all epidemiological indicators increasing across all three local authorities.

"Case rates have increased by over 50% in all three local authorities in the last seven days. Warrington is of particular concern with a case rate over 200 per 100,000. Cheshire West and Chester and Warrington both have a case rate in people aged 60 years and older above 150 per 100,000.

"The most recent data shows an increase for all local authorities and is particularly marked in Warrington. Covid admissions to hospitals in the local NHS (Cheshire and Merseyside STP) have seen a slight increase in the past week, but prior trend was downwards.

"G&A bed occupancy remains high, but static. Critical care position is stable, with significantly greater proportion of beds occupied by non-Covid patients than Covid patients.

"Due to the rate of increase of epidemiological indicators the situation in Cheshire and Warrington is concerning and warrants escalation from Tier 2 to Tier 3."

Halton will remain in the second tier of restrictions along with the rest of the Liverpool City Region.
