Latest Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and M&S Christmas Eve product purchase limit rules - Essex Live

Christmas is almost upon us as people across the UK make their last minute trips to the shops to stock up on the bits they need.

But, as we've become used to this year, there are a number of limits on the products you'll be able to buy.

Before the first lockdown in March, shelves became extraordinarily empty after panicked shoppers stockpiled products.

This led many supermarkets to start to put product purchase limits in place, stopping people buying too many of one single item.

Thankfully, as the year rolled on and we got used to shopping in a pandemic, these product limits went away.

But after reports of empty shelves in some parts of the country due to the increased demand this Christmas as well as problems at the border, they've returned.

We've collected together the rules at every UK supermarket currently putting product purchase limits in place.

Here are all the latest rationing rules at British supermarkets.

Tesco

Tesco have installed a purchase limit on certain items like toilet roll, eggs, rice, soap and handwash to help manage demand over the festive period.

This is being brought in simply to manage high demand at this time of year.

For rice, eggs, soap and handwash products, customers are being restricted to three of each item.

For toilet roll, Tesco have said shoppers are only allowed one item per person.

These restrictions are being brought inside a three-item limit on essential items such as flour, dried pasta and anti-bacterial wipes.

These restrictions have already been in place for months.

Asda

Tesco's rules aren't being replicated at their price rival Asda.

The supermarket was bought by British brothers this year, having previously been owned by US-giant Walmart.

Although Asda have said that they will sometimes put product limits on particular items in extraordinary cases, no plans are currently in place to bring in any product purchase limits.

For the first time in years, Asda won't be open on Boxing Day (December 26).

The supermarket are giving their workers the day off to thank them for working during a difficult year.

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's are England's second-biggest supermarket, and they too aren't planning any product restrictions.

Although images of empty shelves in the fruit and veg sections circulated online, Sainsbury's have said that this was because of local supplier issues, and not because of difficulty delivering stock from the continent.

The only limits in place currently are ones in place year-round.

This includes a maximum of 36 single bottles of water, six bottles of alcoholic spirits and ten crates of beer or cider.

Morrisons

Like their rivals Sainsbury's, Morrisons have said that they have no plans to introduce product purchase limits on any items.

The big-four supermarket instead will increase production to match demand.

They said on their website: "We are increasing production where possible so that we can service the high levels of customer demand we are currently seeing.

"Please be patient and continue to check the website for our latest range."

M&S

Marks and Spencer

Known for being a luxury supermarket, Marks and Spencer haven't dodged the difficulties this year.

Earlier this month, they had to put a product purchase limit on their Christmas light-up snow globe gin after it proved too popular.

But regarding regular products, M&S told The Mirror that there were no product limits in place and that they are "well stocked" for the festive period.
