London Tier 4: The latest supermarket rules for Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda Aldi and Morrisons - My London

Over the weekend 20 million people in London and the South of East of England were put under new Tier 4 restrictions.

The new rules mean we are only allowed to meet one other person outdoors and Christmas plans have been cancelled for millions.

With the stricter lockdown announced it has been a chaotic time for supermarkets and panic buying has returned to London’s streets.

Supermarkets have had to limit orders on certain items after more than 50 countries shut their borders on Sunday to block travellers from the UK due to a new coronavirus strain.

However, the UK-France travel ban has eased and services are now resuming.

Here are the latest supermarket rules in place for Tier 4:

Tesco

You won't be allowed to stock up on certain items in Tesco

Tesco has issued a warning to shoppers ahead of Christmas to 'shop normally'.

Tesco's UK CEO Jason Tarry reassured residents that they have plenty of food available to suit whatever your needs are at Christmas.

In his email, Mr Terry stressed that stock levels remain good and they have a large availability of products across their stores.

"As we have good stock levels, please shop as you normally would so that everyone is able to get what they need," he said.

"We continue to have good availability on the small number of fresh products, such as lettuce, cauliflower and citrus fruit, that we import from France at this time of year.

"More than 300 of our larger stores are now open 24 hours a day until Christmas Eve, with many other stores extending their hours to be open from 5am."

Tesco also continues to have home delivery and Click and Collect slots which have doubled since March to 1.5 million a week - however, the majority of the Christmas slots are now booked up.

Tesco also has temporary purchasing limits on certain essential products to help all customers have access to these products.

It is understood that the product limits are on certain staple items including eggs and toilet roll.

They also have the following safety measures:

  • Encouraging customers to shop alone where possible.

  • Traffic light system to help manage flow in and out.

  • In case of rain, there is protected queuing outside and staff can hand umbrellas out in larger stores.

  • Hand sanitiser and cleaning stations are available around our stores.

  • Social distancing guidelines and signage in place.

  • Customers are asked to follow the legal guidance on wearing a face covering.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury's has a new set of rules

Sainsbury’s has limited shoppers to one person per trolley and said they have added in a range of measures:

  • “We've increased the number of home delivery and Click and Collect slots available and are on track to offer 750,000 weekly slots. As a result, both our existing customers and new customers have access to more slots.

  • “Since March, we have delivered over seven million orders to our elderly and vulnerable customers and these customers still have priority access to online orders. If you are a self-isolating customer, please use the delivery instructions box on the online checkout to let us know.

  • “All our online orders will continue to be delivered without bags, which allows us to serve more customers, however our drivers can help our elderly and vulnerable customers transfer their shopping into bags if needed.

  • “Online order slots for delivery and collection over the core Christmas period, 20 to 23 December, go on general release from 29 November.

  • “For vulnerable customers who have been offered a slot and are unable to place their order online, we are offering a telephone ordering service.

  • “We are now able to accept new customer registrations online for home delivery and Click and Collect slots. We are also now accepting new Delivery Pass registrations.

  • “As we approach winter, we know that queuing will become harder for some of our customers. From Thursday 5 November, we will offer elderly and vulnerable customers and NHS and care workers with an NHS ID priority access to our stores. This means you can skip the queue at any time so that we can welcome you into our stores quickly and safely.

  • “We will continue to have socially distanced queuing systems in place outside our stores, supported by a greeter at the front of stores at busier times of day and we ask that you please queue at a safe distance of two metres apart.

  • “We are following Government guidance and encourage you to please do the same by wearing a mask when you are in our stores. However, we completely understand if you are medically exempt from wearing a mask.

  • “We have provided all Sainsbury’s colleagues with face coverings and all colleagues now wear face coverings while in store, unless they’re exempt according to government guidelines.

  • “Where possible, we ask that you only send one adult per household when you shop with us. This will help us manage the number of people in our stores and make your shop quicker and smoother.

  • “As we keep working hard to feed the nation, we are focused on getting as much food and other essential items as possible onto shelves. We have a good supply of stock so please also continue to buy what you need for yourself and your family and there will be enough for everyone.

  • “We have launched a Volunteer Shopping Card to enable people to shop for others easily in store.

  • “Due to recent changes in the Welsh government’s coronavirus guidelines, we are unable to deliver alcohol past 10pm. If you have a slot booked after 10pm containing alcohol please amend your basket or choose a new delivery slot .

Aldi

Aldi have launched a traffic light system

Aldi has implemented a traffic light system and was one of the first supermarkets to do so during the first lockdown

The store is also encouraging shoppers to pick quieter times to do their shopping which is often between the hours of 7pm to 10pm.

NHS and emergency services staff will be given priority access to the store.

Morrisons

Morrisons supermarket has extended Christmas opening hours

Morrisons has encouraged customers to book their food shop delivery well in advance due to high demand.

The supermarket offers a next-day doorstep delivery service for customers who are self-isolating or unable to get to a store.

Those who are self-isolating and in need of an emergency grocery delivery can phone 0345 611 6111 and select option five.

NHS workers also still have priority access to a Morrisons store who can visit a store from 6-7 am, Monday to Saturday, and 9:30 am on Sundays to be able to shop when it is quieter.

The supermarkets are also managing queues outside of shops by allowing customers with a basket to skip the queue.

Customers doing a smaller shop can get into the store where three customers who are only carrying a basket can enter for every one person with a trolley.

Asda

Asda in Clapham will have more security over Christmas

Asda has announced it will be increasing the coronavirus safety measures in place in its stores across the country in the run-up to Christmas.

Asda also released a new virtual queuing app called 'Qudini' which is available for all 421 main stores.

It allows customers to wait in their cars until there is a slot available if the store is busy.

The 100 busiest stores will also have automatic counting technology which allows the store to control access and help customers social distance.

In addition, the supermarket has added a protective antimicrobial coating to several customers "touch points", such as fridges and freezer handles, in all stores.

The coating adds a protective film which helps to kill bacteria and viruses and is being applied to all basket and trolley handles too.

The precautions put in place in Asda supermarkets include:

  • Face coverings must be worn when visiting stores unless exempt

  • Safety marshalls will be on hand to help customers find tills available, answer questions and provide face coverings if they have forgot theirs.

  • Hand saitisation stations throughout stores

  • Antimicrobial handles - Asda is applying a protective coating to all basket and trolley handles, creating an antimicrobial surface that limits the spread of bacteria. The same coating technology (Biomaster X shield) is already used to limit the spread of bacteria in the NHS Nightingale Excel hospital
