Nottingham reacts to avoiding Tier 4 restrictions after Christmas - Nottinghamshire Live

People in Nottinghamshire have reacted with surprise after the county avoided being placed under strict new restirctions.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed more parts of England would be placed under the Tier 4 'Stay at Home' alert level from one minute past midnight on Boxing Day (Saturday, December 26).

The restrictions - similar to the November lockdown - mean non-essential shops, gyms, cinemas, hairdressers and bowling alleys will be forced to close, while people will be restricted to meeting one other person from another household in an outdoor public space.

The new alert level was brought in amid growing concerns of rising cases and a new strain of coronavirus in the south east.

But there are fears now it will be spreading across the country, having already been detected in 57 areas across Britain including in the vicinity of a Nottinghamshire village.

Following the latest announcement, Nottinghamshire Live readers shared their thoughts on staying in Tier 3.

Wilko Jeff wrote: "Should be in Tier 4. You would think our own councillors would close Nottingham down.

"Order Victoria centre to shut Boxing Day. But hey we opened Christmas market party so should not expect our own authority to do what’s right for public health."

David Comtois added: "I can see us going in to Tier 6 soon and mass riots which the police will not be able to handle. Doesn't matter [what] tier people are in as they're just going travel over the Christmas period despite the rules and guidelines no one will listen."

Hazel Webster commented: "Why not just shut the whole of England down for few months? Problem solved!"

"Just put us all in Tier 4.. We will end up there at some point anyway," agreed Sarah King.

Simon Raynor shared his experience on visiting the city centre, claiming he overheard people saying they had travelled from Tier 4 London.

He wrote: "After shopping in Nottingham this morning bumping in to several people who have travelled to Nottingham from London today to do Christmas shopping it won't be long until Tier 4 is here. I'll put money on Boxing day."

Chris Duthie commented: "So all the people who might have it from Tier 4 have now travelled to a second home, back with family to spread it more. They shouldn’t have been allowed to leave."
