Coronavirus vaccine given to 1,000 Hull patients on first day - Hull Live

More than 1,000 patients were vaccinated against coronavirus in Hull on the first day the vaccine was made available in GP surgeries.

Every patient was over the age of 80 and had been invited to their surgery to play a part in the biggest vaccination programme in NHS history in the fight against coronavirus.

All five primary care networks (PCNs) in Hull area are now delivering covid-19 vaccinations which are available to all residents within priority groups.

A surgery in Holderness was among the first in the region to offer the vaccine on Tuesday, with 84-year old pensioner Peter Ainscough first in the queue to receive the vaccine on a "momentous" day for GP surgeries.

Mr Ainscough said: “I feel very excited. It seems like a big step along the way.

"Hopefully it’s going to open new opportunities for everybody and we will go back to normal eventually.”

It is the latest phase of the UK's vaccine rollout programme, and comes after Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust was one of 50 hospital hubs around the country to receive initial doses of the vaccine, with the first vaccinations taking place on Wednesday, December 9 in at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham.

Following the roll-out in hospitals, the vaccines are now being delivered to GP surgeries which opted into the vaccination scheme, with staff working round the clock to get everything ready.

Meanwhile the KCOM Stadium has been turned into a coronavirus immunisation centre as the rollout for the vaccine continues.

The stadium is one of four vaccination centres announced by the Hull CCG on Tuesday.

The over 80s, those working in care homes and NHS staff identified as clinically extremely vulnerable including people with specific cancers, severe respiratory conditions and those who have received solid organ transplants will be among the first to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Mr Ainscough has become the first in our region to be vaccinated against Covid-19 in a GP surgery

However, the public are reminded that no one should turn up at a site, or contact surgeries, with the aim of getting the vaccine. Eligible people will be contacted and asked to book.

Dr James Crick, associate medical director, Hull Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It’s great that general practice has stepped up to deliver this programme, especially since they are so incredibly busy and have already had to dramatically change their ways of working this year.

We are so proud to protect the most vulnerable in our society.

“Please continue to follow government guidance and protect those around you by practicing social distancing, good hand hygiene and wearing masks in public spaces.”
