The boss of AstraZeneca has promised that the cost of its Covid-19 vaccine will “never be high” after deciding to begin earning a “modest” profit as the world learns to live with the virus.
The Anglo-Swedish drugs group has signed its first for-profit deals for the vaccine. It had previously committed to operating at cost and to providing equitable global access during the pandemic when it licensed the vaccine from the University of Oxford last year in the early stages of the outbreak.
Pascal Soriot, AstraZeneca’s chief executive, said yesterday that Covid-19 was at different stages in different countries but was “becoming endemic” and it was the right time to switch contracts for many countries next year.
