Freezing stamp duty was silly, but it didn't cause the housing boom - The Times

The costs of moving house are all out of kilter. Why on earth do we pay so much to estate agents when it’s solicitors and surveyors who do all the heavy lifting? When you pay an estate agent’s fee you are essentially subsidising their costs for all those speculative owners who put their property on the market but never sell. And then there is stamp duty, which is a rotten, mean and ineffective tax. It is poorly designed, but also, oddly, wrongly blamed for all the ills of the housing market.

I’m sick of hearing people say that our present housing boom is caused by the stamp duty holiday. It’s a lazy conclusion.
