Six months of severe rail strikes could begin in the next two weeks if negotiations between unions, train operators and the government fail.
Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers union (RMT) last night voted overwhelmingly to walk out over jobs, pay and conditions in what is claimed could be the largest strike in rail history.
The mandate to hold industrial action lasts until November, which means rail passengers could face a series of strikes in that time if no settlement is reached. Both sides believe it is likely that some sort of deal will be struck well before then in order to avoid continued disruption, but the union said it will “exercise” its mandate “if we have to”.
