Empty pubs, restaurants closing early and commuter trains deserted — for a country not in lockdown, the UK is looking curiously quiet.

Pub landlords said that they had been hit by a “two-punch combination” of staff sickness and a serious lack of consumer confidence, forcing them to pull down the shutters.
