Prezzo closure: Essex Prezzo to close in 22 affected restaurants as 216 jobs at risk - Essex Live

Restaurant chain Prezzo is to close 22 struggling restaurants - including one in Essex.

The listed Prezzo branches will close for good as part of a rescue deal triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

The company said 216 jobs are at risk, with 22 restaurants to permanently shut their doors - with no plans to reopen once lockdown restrictions are relaxed, according to The Mirror.

Prezzo is the latest closure in a long line of high street casualties, with other food outlets Gourmet Burger, Carluccio's and Byron and also being forced to shut their doors as Covid took a toll on their venues.

Elsewhere, other large high street brands Debenhams and Topshop were also affected by the pandemic.

Cain International, which rescued Prezzo in December, said a pre-pack deal will help secure its long-term future amid "heightened economic uncertainty".

The owner said the move will protect the vast majority of Prezzo's 2,900 workforce.

Jonathan Goldstein, chief executive of Cain, said: "We firmly believe that strong hospitality businesses, such as Prezzo, have a bright future and will play an essential role in reviving the UK economy.

"However, to do so, we must get through this current crisis of mounting liabilities and no revenues.

"The lack of visibility on when and how the sector will reopen has heightened economic uncertainty to the point where decisive action had to be taken to secure the future of the business and the majority of jobs for Prezzo's people.

"We are deeply sorry for all those affected by the permanent closure of the 22 non-viable restaurants.

"It was a difficult, but essential, decision to take but doing so will allow us to save thousands of jobs and create more in the future."

Within the 22 closures, one Essex Prezzo will close it's doors for the last time - Prezzo Saffron Walden.
