Job losses rose rapidly before England's Covid lockdown - The Times

Unemployment hit fresh highs and redundancies rose at the fastest pace in more than a decade in the three months to September as companies prepared for the withdrawal of the furlough scheme.

After rising in September, the number of workers on payroll slipped by 33,000 last month. There were 28.2 million payrolled employees, 0.1 per cent fewer than the previous month. Since February, the number of payroll employees has fallen by more than 800,000.

The figures suggest that the labour market was coming under pressure even before the government announced the second English lockdown on October 31.

Employers were starting to shed jobs as the furlough scheme was wound down, sending the official unemployment rate to 4.8 per cent in the three months to September.
