Water bills rebate for customers as Ofwat fines companies £150m - The Times

Households in London, the South East and nine other areas will save £150 million on their water bills after suppliers were hit by fines for poor performance.

Ofwat, the industry regulator, announced yesterday that 11 of the 17 water companies in England and Wales will have to charge their customers less for missing targets to limit supply interruptions, pollution and sewage damage to homes.

Thames Water and Southern Water performed the worst and will have to return almost £80 million to households between them, Ofwat said.

However, customers will not see their bills go down because the deductions will be more than offset by the inflation-linked increases that suppliers are allowed to apply each year.

Thames Water, for example, is receiving the single biggest penalty
