Ofgem, the energy regulator, has warned of a very challenging winter for consumers as it was criticised for making “inhumane” changes to the price cap that will increase bills even further.
Household energy prices are set to change every three months rather than six, which will mean increases in October and again in January as suppliers are allowed to pass on wholesale cost rises more quickly.
Ofgem made further changes that are expected to cost every household an extra £60 between October and December. It said that these changes, which are designed to enable suppliers to recoup costs, were necessary to reduce “the risk of further large-scale supplier failures which cause huge disruption and push up costs for consumers”.
