Is there a Tube strike tomorrow? What time London Underground walkout starts and if any TfL lines are running - iNews

Rail strikes will cause significant disruption across the country again this week, with action planned for Thursday and Saturday.

And there will be separate strikes in the capital, with London Underground, Overground and bus staff all planning walkouts.

It comes amid a summer that has been characterised by strike action, with unions unhappy with pay offers that sit well below inflation.

Here’s when strike action is expected in London this week, and how it could affect services.

When is the Tube strike?

Workers on London Underground are set to stage a 24-hour strike on Friday 19 August.

Overground workers employed by Arriva Rail London will stage a separate walkout on the same day.

Around 10,000 Tube workers and 400 Overground workers are to take action.

TfL is advising people to avoid travelling on the Tube if possible and only travel on the rest of the network if essential.

It says to expect:

  • Tube – Severe disruption on all lines. Little to no services throughout the day. No Night Tube
  • London Overground – Late start. No Night Overground
  • Trams – Reduced service
  • DLR – Services into Bank running 7am to 6.30pm

On Saturday Tube services will start after 8am. Most TfL services will run as normal after this time, but expect disruption on the following lines and areas:

  • London Overground – Reduced service between 8am and 6pm. No service after 6pm. No Night Overground
  • Elizabeth line – Reduced service
  • District line – No service between Wimbledon and Parson’s Green, and Richmond and Turnham Green before 8am and after 6pm
  • Bakerloo line – No service north of Queen’s Park
  • Trams – Reduced service

Why are workers striking?

The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said Tube workers are to walk out in a dispute over pensions and Overground workers are striking over pay.

Bus drivers, meanwhile, are striking as part of a separate pay dispute.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “Our members will once again take to picket lines in this important dispute over pensions, jobs and conditions.

“They have been messed around by TfL and Mayor Sadiq Khan. And to add insult to injury, they have not seen the detail of this funding letter from government.

“Unless there can be assurances made about jobs, pensions and detrimental changes to working conditions, then our strike on 19 August will go ahead.”

Regarding the bus strikes, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The workers’ parent company RATP is fabulously wealthy and it can fully afford to pay our members a decent wage increase.

“Unite’s members play a crucial role in keeping London moving and they are not going to accept seeing their pay constantly eroded.

“Unite does what it says on the trade union tin and always defends the jobs, pay and conditions of its members. Our members at London United will receive the union’s complete support until this dispute is resolved and a fair pay offer secured.”

It comes after they were offered a pay increase of 3.6 per cent in 2022 and 4.2 per cent next year – well below inflation.

A TfL spokesperson said: “Strikes are bad news for everyone, and we urge Unite and RATP to reach agreement and avoid the need for industrial action.”
