The chief executive of AstraZeneca has launched an impassioned defence of the drugs company’s handling of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine amid legal action from the European Commission and criticism over its communications with regulators in the United States.
Pascal Soriot said that the vaccine had made an “enormous difference”, saving lives around the world less than a year after the company went into partnership with the University of Oxford.
More than 100 vaccines were being researched last year as drugs companies scrambled to develop jabs, but only a handful had been approved, he said. “Where are all those vaccines? They are nowhere.”
Soriot, 61, rejected criticism that the company had overpromised on supplies, arguing that in fact it had been conservative in its forecasts,
