Why AstraZeneca is getting no thanks for vaccinating millions - The Times

When the chief executive of AstraZeneca made the commitment to work with Oxford University on its coronavirus vaccine last spring, he told the scientists his motivation was simple: “My kids would kill me if I didn’t do this.”

Pascal Soriot’s company had no specialism in vaccines. It was under commercial pressure to continue the success of its core drugs business and was working on cancer treatments.

After signing the not-for-profit deal, when Soriot looked at his children — and possibly his shareholders — he might have told himself that the company might be forgoing billions but it could expect a nice PR boost. Almost a year on, AstraZeneca has triumphed, helping to inject the Oxford vaccine into millions of arms around the world.
