'How can we afford it?' Mancunian brilliantly pinpoints huge problem with petrol cars ban - Express

Manchester residents voiced their concern following the Government's plan to ban petrol and diesel cars from sale after 2030 as part of their economic green plan. Sky News reporter Katerina Vittozzi spoke to the public with some admitting that this was important for the environment but they were worried about the costs. One man simply asked: "How are we going to afford it?"

The woman alongside him said: "I have spoken for the last 12 months about getting a hybrid car.

"I was saying this morning I am all for it as long as it is affordable for everyone."

Another resident said: "It is going to be inconvenient and going to be very expensive.

"People are protesting that we are burning the planet."

Another resident said: "I think with the pandemic that makes us step back a bit and look at the world a bit better."

While another said: "It feels like we are going to hell in a handbasket at the moment anyway so we have got to do something about it.

"The environment, it doesn't get much more important than the environment at the end of the day."

The Government announced that it would be implementing the ban in order to reach the overall goal of cutting emissions to net-zero by 2050. 

Ahead of the announcement, the Prime Minister said: "Although this year has taken a very different path to the one we expected, I haven’t lost sight of our ambitious plans to level up across the country.

“My Ten Point Plan will create, support and protect hundreds of thousands of green jobs, whilst making strides towards net-zero by 2050.

“Our green industrial revolution will be powered by the wind turbines of Scotland and the North East, propelled by the electric vehicles made in the Midlands and advanced by the latest technologies developed in Wales, so we can look ahead to a more prosperous, greener future."
