The London areas closest to Kent about to be plunged into a Tier 2 lockdown - Kent Live

Residents of several areas of old Kent which make up Greater London will be plunged into tougher lockdown on Saturday.

London MPs have been told that the alert level is expected to be raised from Tier 1 - the lowest level of lockdown - to Tier 2, which means a ban on meeting people from outside your household indoors.

Areas such as Bromley, Orpington and Bexley are thought to be affected by the changes, reports the MirrorOnline.

MPs were told by Care Minister and Faversham MP Helen Whately that changes would come into effect at 00.01 on Saturday (October 17), multiple sources told the paper.

Ministers expressed concern about the rising number of cases in the over-60s and upward trajectory of cases in intensive care.

Data presented to local MPs showed only 30 per cent of intensive care beds were free in the capital to deal with the sickest patients.

The move means London will join swathes of the North of England in the 'high' risk category for the virus.

Under the rules, which come into force late on Friday, you cannot meet anyone outside your household or support bubble indoors. This applies at home or in a public setting.

The rule of six limits applies outdoors.

People are advised to work from home and limit their use of public transport.

Pubs and restaurants can remain open, with the 10pm curfew still applying.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he expected ministers to make an announcement to Parliament later today.

He said: "This move is based on the expert public health and scientific advice about what is necessary to save lives in the capital.

"In addition to the restrictions already in place, this would mean different households in London not being able to mix indoors.

"Nobody wants to see more restrictions - but this is deemed to be necessary in order to protect Londoners lives by myself, London Council Leaders and by Ministers."

He warned Londoners of a "difficult winter ahead" and urged people to pull together and obey the rules.

The news comes as Health Secretary Matt Hancock was due to update the Commons on the latest coronavirus alert levels, with even tougher restrictions expected for Greater Manchester.
