Coronavirus: Eat Out to Help Out - how many meals were consumed in your area? - Sky News

Restaurants in Birmingham Hall Green claimed the highest sums of money under the government's Eat Out to Help Out scheme last month.

The average claim per restaurant in the constituency was over £14,200, with £2.3m received by the 165 restaurants there that took part in the initiative.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said anyone eating at a participating outlet Monday to Wednesday during the month of August could have a state-funded 50% discount on food and soft drinks up to a maximum of £10, with restaurants claiming the money back from the government.

Eat Out to Help Out has been deemed an overwhelming success after it encouraged many people to return to restaurants following the coronavirus lockdown.

Now the scheme has ended, official government figures have been released showing the total number of registered restaurants, the total number of meals claimed for, the total amount of discount claimed, and the average discount per meal in pounds and pennies in each UK parliamentary constituency.

Bristol North West had the highest number of meal claims (3,245) per restaurant, followed by Filton and Bradley Stoke in South Gloucestershire (2,615), Birmingham Hodge Hill (2,500), Harlow in Essex (2,369) and Corby in Northamptonshire (2,217).

Birmingham Hall Green had the highest amount of money claimed back by each restaurant, with £14,206 on average and a total of £2,344,000. Llanelli in Carmarthenshire was next with £13,946, followed by Birmingham Hodge Hill (£12,879), East Londonderry in Northern Ireland (£12,547) and Bradford East (£11,689).

More from Covid-19

This indicates the scheme has had a better impact in these areas, as customers tended to spend more on average and eateries recouped more cash from the government.

People in Rayleigh and Wickford in Essex had the highest discount of all the constituencies - an average saving of £8.22 per meal, while the lowest was in Liverpool Walton at £2.80. The UK average was about £6.

Of the home nations, the scheme seems to have been most popular in Northern Ireland, recording the highest number of meals and total amount of discount claimed per restaurant. Some 1,263 meals claimed per restaurant and £7,316 per restaurant.

In English regions, the popularity of the scheme has been higher in the West Midlands, North West and South West, with an average of more than 1,000 meals claimed per restaurant and more than £5,800 per restaurant claimed.

In London, diners claimed an average of 755 meals per restaurant.

People in the City of London and Westminster, the area with the highest number of participating restaurants (1,498), got through a whopping 849,000 meals and enjoyed a total discount of £6,058,000.

This was the highest number of meals by far anywhere in the UK under the initiative.

The second highest number of meals eaten was Manchester Central where they tucked into 614,000 as part of the scheme.

In Glasgow North East, 559,000 meals were consumed, while in Glasgow Central people ate 554,000.

Next highest was Liverpool Riverside with 436,000 meals, followed by Edinburgh South West (416,000) and Birmingham Ladywood where people tucked into 402,000.

In Northern Ireland, Belfast South had the most meals in the scheme at 374,000.

Up to 27 August, the total number of meals claimed in the UK was 114,156,000 which accounts for a total discount of £659,391,000 in 127,625 restaurants.

Independent businesses and larger chains were among the establishments to have taken part, and some have said they will continue to offer the price-reduction despite the government ruling out extending the scheme beyond its end date of 31 August.
