Defence Secretary Ben Wallace seeks partners to build Tempest jets - This is Money

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has called on more countries to join the UK's Tempest programme to build the next generation of fighter jets.

Italy and Sweden have already signalled their interest in the project – which is a partnership between the MoD and companies such as BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and the UK arm of Italian group Leonardo.

Wallace said the UK is 'keen to see more international partners join us on the flightpath of discovery'.

The comments came as Swedish defence giant Saab prepares to invest £50million in the project this week.

Saab is planning to set up a research centre in the UK that could be close to BAE Systems' Tempest teams in Lancaster.

Speaking at the virtual version of the Farnborough Airshow, Wallace said: 'There is room for a broad range of other partnerships.'

Wallace revealed that seven more companies are on board with the project which was launched in 2018: Bombardier, Collins, GE, GKN, Martin-Baker, Qinetiq and Thales.

Bringing more countries into the projects would help to spread the costs.
