Coronavirus: Pub landlords and hairdressers 'still scared' of COVID-19 as they reopen their doors - Sky News

Thousands of businesses across England can reopen today in the most significant easing of lockdown rules so far.

Pubs, restaurants, cinemas and hairdressers are among the places set to welcome back customers on what has been dubbed "Super Saturday" for the first time since the end of March.

But one business owner told Sky News that although he needed to get back to work to pay his rent, he feels "a little bit scared" to do so.

"I have the sanitiser, I'm wearing gloves but still I have to touch people's faces and I'm very close to them," Ed Rahimi, a barber in Greater Manchester said.

"I'm a little bit scared. Coronavirus doesn't care who you are and I think we're going to be back in lockdown within the next few weeks," he added.

Pubs will be able to open indoor tables to customers but with significant new social distancing restrictions in place.

The New Inn pub in Clapham, Lancashire, has implemented a one-way system to control movement, table-service only and is only taking a third of its normal number of customers.

Landlord Tom Ledsham says a lot is riding on the success of this weekend's trading.

"We will have fewer punters and that will be an issue for us," he said.

"So it's really important for us that we hit the ground running from the offset, so that we make sure that people are aware that the pub is a safe place to come back to and that we've got it under control."

But there are, undoubtedly, challenges ahead to address the concerns of customers.

Joanna Hesse, a hairdresser in Manchester, has spent "thousands of pounds" on protective equipment for her salon and staff.

Customers will not be offered drinks or magazines. Instead, they will be given a disposable face mask, gown and hair towel.

"I'm doing everything possible to get people in the chair, and to make them feel as safe as possible," Mrs Hesse said.

"Every hairdresser I've spoken to has spent thousands of pounds on this, as I have. And my concern is that unless the government helps financially with that, soon people are going to start cutting corners."

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has warned people that they could end up "behind bars" if they get carried away as pubs reopen.

Mr Hancock told the Daily Mail he would not "shirk" from shutting pubs and restaurants again and imposing local lockdowns if required.

He said: "I'm no killjoy, but the virus can still kill. I don't want to see bars and pubs have to close again. I love going to the pub and enjoy a pint or two."

On Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson told people not to "blow" progress in combating the spread of the disease made during the lockdown as he deployed the government's new slogan "enjoy summer safely".

His comments came after chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty said the pandemic "is a long way from gone" as he urged the public to follow social-distancing rules as the lockdown is eased.

Sir Patrick Vallance, the chief scientific adviser, also warned of the danger of the "superspreading" of COVID-19 occurring in pubs.

In Northern Ireland, pubs were allowed to reopen on Friday, but Scotland and Wales are taking a more cautious approach.
