First McDonald's walk-in customers enjoy Big Mac and chicken nugget meals as chain reopens 11 restaurants for takeaway orders
- McDonald's has reopened 11 Roadchef service station restaurants today
- Roll-out to high street, town and city centre restaurants across UK from June 24
- Number of customers in store will be capped, with a one-way system in place
- There will be hand sanitiser at cleaning stations with seating areas closed off
The first McDonald's walk-in customers since lockdown enjoyed a Big Mac and chicken nuggets today as the fast food chain reopened its first 11 motorway service station restaurants.
McDonald's has been working hard to get its restaurants back open after being forced to close them due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Yvonne Oakes from Halifax and Charlie Whittaker from Doncaster tucked into a Big Mac meal and chicken nugget meal, washed down with Coke and Coke Zero at the Watford Gap services.
Ms Whittaker, who was the first customer through the door, said: 'I'm so delighted that McDonald's is back at Roadchef as it means I can once again get my fix – it has been too long!'
In the next phase of McDonald's reopening, the Roadchef service station restaurants threw open their doors at 11am this morning for walk-in takeaway for motorway users.
This will roll-out to high street, town and city centre restaurants across the UK and Ireland from Wednesday, June 24.
The number of customers allowed in store will be capped, with a one-way system in place and hand sanitiser at cleaning stations.
There will be fewer self-order screens switched on, sanitised at least every 30 minutes, while seating areas, customer toilets and lifts will remain closed.

Colouring books and play areas will remain closed, as will the seating areas, customer toilets and lifts.
The High Street chain has also emphasised that people should not visit any of the restaurants if they are unwell.
McDonald's also announced that its popular breakfast menu will be back from June 24 but has yet to reveal the branches at which it will be available.
McDonald's said the breakfast menu will only be available in 'a small number' of restaurants to begin with as part of a trial. The plan is then to roll it out nationwide in July if the trial is deemed successful.
There was chaos across the country as the fast food giant reopened 1,000 restaurants last week with orders via McDelivery or via one of 923 drive-thrus.
Customers were seen queuing for hours to get their hands on a Big Mac, with cars blocking off emergency vehicles in some locations.
Fans can also get their hands on McMuffins as of June 24 when McDonald's will trial breakfast service in a small number of restaurants.
It aims to roll out the breakfast menu nationwide in July. Stores reopened with a restricted menu last month, with lower staff numbers and social distancing in kitchens.
The fast-food chain started reopening to the public on June 2 when 168 restaurants were opened offering drive-thru services and an extra 22 stores were offering deliveries.
The next day, 497 more drive-thru restaurants opened with 42 of those also offering delivery.
On June 4 McDonald's reopened another 261 restaurants which took the total number of stores back open to just under 1,000.
