Online grocer Ocado has announced plans to shut one of its warehouses in a move impacting around 2,300 workers.
The company will shut its customer fulfilment centre in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, which is its oldest site.
About a fifth of Ocado.com's 400,000 weekly orders are handled at the site.
The company insisted its orders will not be affected, with work transferred to the company's "high-productivity, next-generation facilities" around the UK, including a site at Luton due to open later this year.
It said the move was part of its joint venture with Marks & Spencer.
In a statement to shareholders, the company said the Hatfield site "remains a foundation stone in the Ocado story" but over the past decade the company had "unveiled a raft of new innovations, enabling huge leaps forward" in efficiency.
The latest generation of robotic customer fulfillment centres consistently pick well over 200 units per labour hour, compared to around 150 for its Hatfield.
Staff will enter a consultation period due to run into the summer.
Ocado chief executive Tim Steiner said: "We have many brilliant Hatfield-based colleagues who have been with us for a long time and are a big part of our journey.
"We want to keep as much of this talent and experience within the business as possible and expect to retain a large proportion of colleagues impacted by these changes, either in our new Luton CFC or across our wider UK network.
"We will be doing everything we can to support those affected through the consultation."
