Diesel collapse drags down car sales | Business - The Times

The collapse in both demand and supply of diesel vehicles caused new car sales to slump last month by 22 per cent year-on-year.

The dwindling number of diesels coming into the market and the historically low numbers of current registrations highlight the accelerated take-up of electrified vehicles, to the point where plug-ins have now overtaken diesel sales.

In August, 68,000 new cars were registered compared with 87,000 in the same month last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. Of those new registrations, only 12.4 per cent were diesel. Not so long ago, before the “dieselgate” scandal and the debate about how polluting diesel vehicles really are, diesel sales accounted for nearly half of UK deliveries.
