The 26 areas where Covid rates have risen dramatically in a week amid Delta variant surge - Somerset Live

The Delta variant surge across the UK has seen a large proportion of Somerset's local coronavirus rates rise week to week, according to government data.

Public Health England is publishing a weekly update outlining the number of new cases reported in each seven-day period for every area of the country, as well as an interactive heatmap showing the most affected areas.

The rolling data reports the new cases being confirmed in any seven-day period, with the data published on Thursday (July 8) covering the period up to July 3.

Amid concerns over the spread of the Delta variant across the UK, there are now 88 areas of Bath and Somerset that have seen weekly Covid cases rise across the last fortnight.

Of these, 26 have seen dramatic rises in the number of weekly cases, with all recording at least ten more new Covid cases in the week up to July 3 than in the previous week (up to June 26).

The area that has seen the biggest spike in the entire county is Portishead South, where there were 38 cases recorded in the last seven days as opposed to just five in the week up to June 26 - a jump of 33 cases.

Clevedon South and Yeo saw the second-biggest jump of 31 infections, with Oldfield Park East in Bath (an increase of 30 cases) the other area to top 30 more positive tests.

Clevedon Central also had 29 more cases in the last seven days, with Long Ashton and Gordano (24) completing the top five.

The remaining areas to have seen spikes of over ten in the most recent week include areas of Weston-super-Mare, Keynsham and Frome as well as a number of more rural areas.

You can see the latest national data on the online COVID-19 cluster map.

The map uses data from Public Health England's "second generation surveillance system".

The map highlights which areas of the nation have three or more confirmed cases of the virus and colour co-coordinates the areas by how many cases they have.

The map is divided into sections - officially known as 'Middle Super Output Areas' - and each section is coloured a different shade depending on how many positive Covid test results have been recorded in that area.

The darker the colour on the image, the more positive test results have been recorded.

Data for the most recent five days has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.
