The future of 5,000 British industrial jobs have been plunged into uncertainty after the Serious Fraud Office announced that it has begun an investigation into the empire of the metals magnate Sanjeev Gupta.
The decision by the SFO prompted the collapse of rescue talks for Gupta’s group, which employs 30,000 people on four continents, with sizeable operations in Europe, Australia and the US.
The investigation is sure to draw in the role of the former prime minister David Cameron as an adviser to Gupta’s discredited financier Lex Greensill.
