For 50 years the gas boiler has been the mainstay of central heating. Its days, however, are numbered.
According to Boris Johnson’s flagship climate policy, to be unveiled tomorrow in the run-up to the Cop26 climate summit, new boilers will be banned in British homes from 2035.
The policy is central to the government’s legally enshrined commitment to cut the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions to “net zero” by the middle of the century. Domestic heating is responsible for about a fifth of UK emissions, and politicians have long accepted that gas has no future in British homes.
Instead it is backing a swathe of alternatives. Ministers are keen to see new district heating networks, which will share heat between buildings. Hydrogen boilers are also
