People given the Moderna jab continue to produce antibodies against the dominant Delta strain of the coronavirus six months after receiving their second dose, new data shows.
However, the study also highlighted the potential threat of the Beta variant, first detected in South Africa. In nearly half of the blood samples examined in the study, the antibodies mobilised by the jab were not able to neutralise a laboratory-made replica of the Beta strain after six months.
The findings come as scientists raise concerns that waning immunity may partly explain “breakthrough” infections in vaccinated people in Israel, where the health authorities have stepped up a programme of third booster jabs as cases of the Delta variant rise.
