Lockdown sends retail sales tumbling during April | Business - The Times

Retail sales fell by a record 18.1 per cent last month, after a fall of 5.2 per cent in March when the government introduced the national lockdown.

Almost every area of retailing suffered in April, according to figures published by the Office for National Statistics, which found that only online shopping and shops selling alcohol had benefited. Retail sales not through shops rose by 18 per cent and sales of beers, wines and spirits rose by 2.3 per cent, the statistics body said. It has been compiling records on retail sales since 1996.
